What is an Interstitial Ad in Digital Advertising?

In the early days of the Internet, pop-up ads were one of the most primitive digital ad formats. Users would see oversized windows “pop up” unexpectedly before their eyes, surely not to be missed. As a result, pop-up blockers were developed to provide a better browsing experience.

What is an Interstitial Ad

This ad type was eventually reintroduced to digital advertising. This type of advertising is now more commonly known as an interstitial ad.

What does Interstitial Mean in Advertising?

So what is an interstitial ad?

Interstitial means “in-between.” It is a form of advertising that appears between other content on a website or mobile app.

Ads like these are designed to appear between pieces of content. Typically, they appear during transition points in an application, such as:

  • Between activities
  • During pauses
  • Or between levels

The user has the choice of clicking into an interstitial ad and continuing to its destination or closing it and returning to the app.

The main difference between interstitial ads and pop-up ads is that interstitials take up the entire screen. In addition, they can expand (known as expandable ads), which begin as regular banner ads before taking up the entire screen.

You can display interstitials in a variety of formats, such as:

  • Text
  • Static images
  • Rich media
  • Or video

Different ad types have varying close times. A static ad can usually be closed instantly, whereas an interstitial video ad has up to a five-second delay before the user can close it. Additionally, playable ads can be used in interstitials, which allow users to preview or interact with a game before downloading it.

Are Interstitial Ads Good?

Identifying what an interstitial ad is and how it differs from a banner ad can help you better understand what it is.

Yes. There is no doubt that interstitial ads are among the most popular ad formats due to high impression rates and click-through rates (CTR).

Why? Here are a few reasons:

  • The interstitial ads appear more prominently on mobile devices, so they are ideal for them. Advertisements with larger sizes generate more impressions and user engagement. Thereby overcoming ad viewability issues or banner blindness on smartphones.
  • A higher viewability leads to a higher click-through rate (CTR).
  • A higher CTR leads to a higher conversion rate and overall ad revenue
  • The interface of gaming apps and games that run on mobile sites often requires the entire viewport. As a result, interstitial ads are one of the most popular mobile ad formats.

How Much do Interstitial Ads Pay?

We will explore how interstitial ads pay can help us understand what an interstitial ad is.

Interstitial ads pay differently depending on the type of game you use them in. In-app purchases (IAPs) and ads can be the main sources of revenue for games (between 50 and 100%). Depending on the genre and monetization strategy, the primary source of income will vary.

Your app can be monetized with interstitial ads if they are implemented correctly. Interstitial ads can have an eCPM of $4 to $6 on average.

What are the Benefits of Interstitial Ads?

Taking a look at the advantages of interstitial advertising will help you better understand what it is.

You can use interstitial ads to monetize your app in many ways. Their eCPMs are higher than those of banner ads.

Interstitials ads receive a lot of attention for a variety of reasons:

Diversify your ad offer

By increasing the diversity of the app’s ads, interstitial ads can help combat “banner blindness.” The full-screen nature of interstitial ads makes them more likely to engage users than other ads.

High revenues

In contrast to banner ads, interstitials have a higher eCPM and CTR. In the right circumstances, interstitials can contribute to an increase in revenue for developers.

Higher Engagement

Interstitial ads are designed to be more engaging than banner and pop-up ads. They are more likely to attract the attention of consumers, as they require users to take action before continuing with their browsing experience. In fact, according to research from Google:

Interstitials were found to be three times as effective at capturing attention compared to banners and two times as effective compared to rich media ads.

What are Interstitial Ads’ Biggest Challenges?

Taking a look at interstitial ads challenges can help you better understand what is an interstitial ad.

Despite their many benefits, interstitial ads can also present challenges. The following are the most common challenges associated with interstitial ads.

They can be penalized

Interstitials are crucial to the monetization of games. However, they must be used correctly. Using intrusive interstitials can ruin the user experience, so Google has penalized developers in the past. Interstitials should only be placed at key moments, such as after completing a game or level. If you want to avoid penalties, you should avoid:

  • Using the same ad repeatedly
  • Placing interstitials upon app loading and exiting
  • And unexpected interstitials during a player’s action

Users don’t choose to see them

The biggest challenge with interstitial ads is that they can be disruptive to the user experience. If you place them in a position where they block a user’s ability to navigate or use their phone or tablet, then they will become frustrated and likely uninstall your app.

If you are an ad network or publisher, you want to make sure that your users don’t feel like their experience has been interrupted in any way. If you do it right, however, users will gladly engage with your ads as they help them get more from their browsing experience.

Clickthrough Rate

If the advertisement will not be relevant it will tend to have lower click-through rates than other forms of advertising because users often don’t want to take action on an ad that interrupts what they are doing. But having good advertisement will lead to good clickthrough rate.

How do I Create an Interstitial Ad?

What is an interstitial ad? Understanding how to create one is the easiest way to answer the question.

Rewarded interstitial ads appear automatically in your app and display full-page ads that reward users for viewing ads. You can place them at natural breaks & transitions in your app’s interface, such as after levels are completed.

Users don’t have to opt-in to view a free interstitial, unlike rewarded ads. Rewarded interstitial ad units can show interactive and video ads.

The steps below will guide you through creating a new ad unit within your AdMob account and implementing it in your app. In order for this ad unit to display ads, you must complete all the steps listed below.

Instructions:

    1. Go to https://apps.admob.com and sign in with your AdMob account.
    2. In the sidebar, click Apps.
    3. Choose the app you are creating this ad unit for. If it is not included in the list of recent apps, select Add app to add a new one or click View all apps to see all the apps you’ve added.
    4. Select Ad units from the sidebar.
    5. Click on get started. Click Add ad unit if you’ve already created one for this app.
    6. You can select Rewarded ads by clicking Select.
    7. Give this ad unit a name. Make it easier to identify your app by including relevant information, such as ad format and location.
    8. Set up the reward settings for this ad unit as follows:
      • Reward amount:
      • Enter how many reward items the user will receive. The number must be a whole number.
      • Reward item: Enter the item name the user will receive as a reward. Examples: Coins, extra lives
      • Checkbox: This setting overrides the rewarded settings provided by third-party advertising networks. By default, it is checked.

The following advanced settings are optional:

  • Ad type: Choose the ad type(s) that can appear in this ad unit. Click on any of the boxes to select a combination of ad types. You will receive an error if you uncheck all of the boxes. A minimum of one ad type must be selected for each ad unit. We suggest checking all of the boxes to maximize revenue for this ad unit.
  • eCPM floor: When creating an ad unit, you can specify a minimum eCPM floor (also known as a floor eCPM). With this setting, the AdMob Network won’t serve ads with eCPM values below your minimum eCPM.
  • Enable eCPM floors for your ad unit by clicking the eCPM floor toggle.
  • To set a floor for AdMob Network eCPM, enter a global eCPM value.

This eCPM floor applies only to the AdMob Network. Mediation groups configured with third-party ad networks and custom events are not affected.

  • Click on Create ad unit.
  • To start showing ads, follow the instructions in the Google Developers Get Started guide (Android, iOS, Unity). In order to implement the campaign, you will need to have your app ID and the ad unit ID.

It is still one of the best ways to promote a mobile app or game, even if some users use ad blockers to avoid them. Interstitial ads cover the entire screen. Because they are highly compelling and ten times larger than banner ads, they are more effective at capturing users’ attention. As opposed to banner ads, which are more like silent guests. Without interfering with the content, these ads appear wordless on the edges of the users’ screens.

How often should you show interstitial ads?

Place an interstitial ad after several screens or actions in your app if it is not a game but has many pages or sections. Interstitial ads should not appear every time the user takes an action. Interstitial ads should appear before rather than after the break page.
