Subliminal Advertising to Boost Your Online Business

A subliminal media message may sound like something from a science fiction film to most everyday consumers. However, for those of us in the advertising world, subliminal messages in advertising are a widely used marketing strategy.

When done well, they can be very effective. Hollywood films and TV series often depict subliminal messages in ominous ways.

Subliminal Advertising Examples

However, the reality is often quite different. It’s important to know some things before you consider incorporating subliminal advertising into your marketing campaign. This article will explore subliminal messaging in depth, explaining what it is and why brands use it. We will then look at some successful subliminal advertising examples.

What is a Subliminal Message in Advertising?

Subliminal messages are designed to target the subconscious mind and influence it without the person being aware of it. These messages are usually embedded in other stimuli, such as music, images, or even spoken words. While subliminal messages may not be consciously perceived, they can still have an impact on behavior.

For instance, a subliminal message promoting a brand of toothpaste may remain in one’s memory. This may cause someone to purchase that brand the next time they go to the store. Subliminal messages are controversial, and their effectiveness is often debated. In the world of advertising, they can nonetheless have a profound effect on behavior.

Various colors, shapes, and words are used in these ads to enable customers to link a brand with its intended meaning. Subliminal ads, whether they are hiding a double meaning in a logo or performing Photoshop magic, are definitely clever.

A clever advertisement enhances the audience’s sense of understanding – and subsequently, their sense of satisfaction with your product.

Is Subliminal Advertising Still Used?

Let us answer whether subliminal advertising is still used before we look at subliminal advertising examples.

It is still inconclusive whether subliminal messages can really persuade people to do or want things they wouldn’t otherwise want. Subliminal messages are believed by some to work wonders. However, placebo effects are often at play when they do make a difference for people.

In some double-blind studies, however, embedded images appear to influence behavior and actions. However, the effect lasts only for a very short period, and even then, it only has a marginal effect. Advertising and corporations have tried to harness their potential despite the jury being out on their efficacy.

Subliminal Advertising Examples

Having established that subliminal advertising is still in use, let’s explore subliminal advertising examples.

The Amazon logo

Where is the subliminal message in a logo that you’ve seen a million times already? How about the arrow pointing from ‘a’ to ‘z’, conveying to you subconsciously the fact that Amazon literally has anything you’re looking for? Furthermore, the arrow represents a smile, subliminally encouraging you to feel good about the brand. So there are two messages that are cleverly hidden in the logo.

The FedEx logo

Bet you haven’t noticed this. FedEx uses negative space cleverly. What do you see between the ‘E’ and the ‘X’? That’s right, another arrow. The logo was designed by the Landor Associated design bureau in 1994. It has earned over 40 awards and was featured in Rolling Stone’s run-down of the top 10 best logos.

Toblerone

You aren’t being subliminally sold anything by the Toblerone logo. It differs from FedEx’s subtle promise of quick deliveries and Amazon’s promise that anything can be ordered. If you look closely at the mountain range that mimics the distinctive chunks of chocolate, you’ll see a bear standing on its hind legs.

The Toblerone bar was invented in Bern, the Swiss capital dubbed the ‘City of Bears’. Its coat of arms features the logo of its birthplace, thus paying homage to the bar’s roots.

Does Subliminal Advertising Really Work?

The truth is that no one knows for sure. Several people would tell you that it does not. Many people claim that ads do not influence them, even though they have been around for centuries. The reason for this is that people dislike feeling manipulated. It is especially true when they feel they have very little control over their conscious actions.

However, several studies, cited by Philipp Merkle, a professor of psychology at Waterloo University indicate otherwise. They show that observers perceive a large amount of information even when they are unaware that they are perceiving it. The UK, the US, and Australia have banned subliminal (deceptive) advertising since 1958.

What are the Three Types of Subliminal Messages?

Let us take a peek at the types of subliminal messages to help you understand subliminal advertising examples.

Subliminal messages are composed of three parts:

Subliminally presented stimuli

Subliminally presented stimuli are perceived below the level of conscious awareness. That is, they are processed by the brain but not consciously perceived. This would be implied in the Coke commercial slandering Pepsi for wanting to be like them. There must be subliminal stimuli included in subliminal messages that lie beneath the level of consciousness.

Your subconscious understands these stimuli, but you are not aware that they are registered. Often, subliminal stimuli appear as visual images that are flashed in between other images. In this case, the stimuli are moving so fast that they cannot register them.

Subliminally presented stimuli can be found in songs in the form of fleeting sounds. Also, they can be presented in lyrics that can be repeated or convey another meaning when reversed.

Subliminal perception

When person gets subconsciously influenced by the series of stimulus (actions) it is called subliminal perception. By registering anywhere within our five senses, which are constantly investigating the world outside of our conscious perception, subliminal stimuli are able to sneak by our conscious awareness.

One constantly inspects the world with their senses subliminally, unaware of many things, including the breath, most of the time. In order to be a subliminal message, the stimuli must remain below one’s level of conscious awareness and perception.

Oftentimes, people focus on one specific thing in the world, excluding all else from their attention. Subjective thresholds define the level of consciousness below which one is aware of a stimulus. Individuals’ subjective realities differ.

Within the objective threshold, however, is a stimulus perceived as remaining above the level of conscious awareness. This is because the stimulus is objectively detectable for every individual.

Subliminal processing

Our unconscious brain processes and registers stimuli that occur below our conscious level of awareness. This provides the individual with new information about the world that will help them make informed decisions in the future. This indicates that the message has undergone subliminal processing.

Every subliminal message aims to achieve this. Alternatively, sensory gating is another barrier that subliminal messages must remain under.

The thalamus, which is the brain’s main attention center, is where sensory gating occurs. People focus their conscious perception on other things when faced with redundant information they deem unimportant.

It is the goal of subliminal messages to pass through one’s distractions unnoticed. Subliminal stimuli bypass conscious perception by stimulating and arousing senses that appeal to the thalamus.

Subliminal Advertising and the Success of PPC Campaigns

You can use subliminal advertising approach in your PPC Campaigns but make sure it is not deceptive enough that you do some fraud or cheat your customers.

As already mentioned above there are lots of ways you can hide your message in the logo or content but again intentions of your such strategy is make an impressions on customer’s mind so that he gets influenced enough to purchase it.

In anyways your all marketing campaigns are important. You need to track important KPIs so that you remain on track of success.

FAQs:

What is an example of a subliminal message?

A common type of subliminal message is embedded images. These are images that are flashed on the screen for a very brief period of time, too brief for the conscious mind to process. However, the subconscious mind can still pick up on them. In one famous experiment, researchers flashed the word “DRINK” on a screen during a movie.

Why do companies use subliminal advertising?

Essentially, it influences the target audience without the target audience even knowing it. It’s unlikely they will realize these messages have any effect on them. Basically, subliminal advertising leaves viewers with an unconsciously acquired message.

Wrap Up

Having read this, you might be wondering: Can subliminal marketing be used in your ad campaigns? Do you even need to? Answering that question isn’t as simple as it seems. There is a lot to consider when it comes to how you approach it.

Communication that is misleading is certainly something you want to avoid. If anyone noticed it, you could be in legal trouble. Despite not being outright deceptive, you don’t want to irritate your customers.

Generally, the subliminal advertising examples above involve logo graphic design choices. These logos do not contain any misleading or malicious information. The best way to utilize subliminal messaging is to stick with harmless, non-misleading material.

For anything that may cause a legal issue, you should consult an attorney first. Also, you can manage your subliminal advertising with PPC Signal.
