Meet Google’s Memory-Savings Chrome for Mac, Windows, and Android

The latest chrome browser comes with a new ‘PartitionAlloc’ for improved security, space efficiency, and low allocation latency.

Meet Google’s Memory-Savings Chrome for Mac, Windows, and Android

Below is what Google said about the new tech in town- PartitionAlloc.

“A partition is a heap that contains certain object types, objects of specific sizes, or objects of a certain lifetime (as the caller prefers). Callers can create as many partitions as they need. Each partition is separate and protected from any other partitions.

Each partition holds multiple buckets. A bucket is a region in a partition that contains similar-sized objects.

PartitionAlloc aligns each object allocation with the closest bucket size. For example, suppose a partition has three buckets for 64 bytes, 256 bytes, and 1024 bytes. In that case, PartitionAlloc will satisfy an allocation request for 128 bytes by rounding it up to 256 bytes and allocating from the second bucket.”

Chrome is frequently being criticized for its memory usage. The fact mentioned above has prompted the search engine giant to address these complaints in recent browser releases for Mac, Windows, and Android.

It is currently used everywhere in Chrome for Android and 64-bit Windows.

The new Chrome browser dubbed ‘Chrome M89’ has seen significant memory savings on Windows operating system.

Currently, users can experience up to 22% for browser processes, 8% for renderers, and 3% for GPUs. Most notably, Chrome M89’s responsiveness has improved by up to 9%.

The move comes after years of complaints from the users about the memory consumption of the browser application. Besides, competing applications, such as Safari and Firefox browsers, are also smarter about optimal device memory space usage.

The new Chrome can recover up to 100 Megabytes per tab by discarding idle memory of less use to tabs in the foreground.

Some Beta users have reported over 20% in memory savings on some popular sites.

Google said on its blog, “Chrome now reclaims up to 100MiB per tab, which is more than 20% on some popular sites, by discarding memory that the foreground tab is not actively using, such as big images you’ve scrolled off-screen”.

How does this move impact iOS users?

On the iOS platform, Google recently reduced its background tab memory footprint by up to 8% and over 1GB on some applications.

Besides, the tech giant has gone the extra mile to keep MacOS users happy by integrating its Chrome 87 with JavaScript timer wakeup tab throttling on hidden pages to further elevate the Apple Energy Impact score for background pages by more than 65%.

Noisy fans and increased heat release will be a thing of the past to MacBook users.

How does Google’s move impact Android users?

Google uses Android App Bundles to optimize individual device downloads and isolated Splits to facilitate the loading of on-demand splits.

The repackaging of Chrome on Android platforms is expected to alleviate the following issues:

  1. Minimize resource exhaustion crashes
  2. Improves memory usage by 5%
  3. Increase boot times are 7.5% faster
  4. Boast page loads are up to 2% faster

Android 10 and later devices with more than 8GB of RAM using Chrome will enjoy an improved user experience (UX) in the form of the following:

  1. Up to 8.5% faster page load
  1. Over 28% smoother in scrolling and input latency
  1. A freeze-dried tab, or a lightweight tab that’s the same size as the screenshot launch mobile Chrome 13% faster
